Houston’s Seth Romero suspended indefinitely

The University of Houston has suspended junior left-handed pitcher Seth Romero indefinitely for multiple violations of university and athletic department policy, the school announced on April 7.

“At this time, it is important for Seth to focus primarily on his academic and personal life,” Houston vice president for athletics Hunter Yurachek said.

Romero is one of the top pitching prospects in June’s MLB First-Year Player Draft. As Houston’s ace this spring, Romero is 3-3 with a 3.05 ERA, 76 strikeouts and 18 walks in 44 1/3 innings over seven starts.

“I’m sorry for the players, the fans of our program,” Houston coach Todd Whitting said. “They have to deal with the suspension of one of our good players.

“Going forward, we’ll keep an eye on the situation. We’ll continue to evaluate the situation. Nothing permanent has been decided.”

Last season, Romero was also suspended for two weeks to begin the season for conduct detrimental to the team.
